This is an email we received from a lady who paid a recent visit to the roadside zoo called Guzoo. The situations described in the email highlight the ongoing abuse and neglect that Voice for Animals, Zoocheck and many other animal rights and welfare groups have been fighting against since the early 90's.
The conditions have been systematically and continually condoned by the Government of Alberta despite complaints starting shortly after it opened.
To whom it may concern:
I am not really sure who I need to contact with my concerns, but I will start here. Recently on a trip from Edmonton to Medicine Hat, my family and I decided to stop at Guzoo farm in Three Hills, Alberta. Someone recently told us about it and we thought we would check it out.
When we first got there, I was a little leery as there were approximately 10 dogs laying around, some with open sores on their bodies. I figured it couldn't be that bad so we paid our $30.00 and proceeded into the zoo. What I saw there made me absolutely sick.
All of the animal cages were dirty, water was very dirty and food was lying around all over, rotting in the sun. It was a very hot day, and none of the animals had proper shelter out of the sun. Many of them were greatly in distress panting and trying to keep cool. Most of the cages had weeds that were knee to waist high and in place of real trees and plants the animals had Christmas garland.
In the lion pen, which was no bigger than a small backyard, held 3 lions and a rotting carcass of a goat. One monkey cage held a monkey that was throwing himself at the cage door. Also, they had a pen that held domestic cats. The room reeked of urine, and when I took a closer look, the cats had no litter pan.
I could go on and on about the conditions here but I am sure you get the point. I have no idea where to begin with this and I am sure my little opinion is only one of many. If you know of any one who could possibly look into these horrible conditions please pass this on. These poor animals do not deserve to live in this way.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
