Whether hunting is right or wrong, a spiritual experience, or an outlet for the killer instinct, one thing it is not is a sport.  Sport is when individuals or teams compete against each other under equal circumstances to determine who is better at a given game or endeavor.  Hunting will be a sport when deer, elk, bears, and ducks are... given 12-gauge shotguns.  Bet we'd see a lot fewer drunk yahoos (live ones, anyway) in the woods if that happened.

Alarming Level of Ignorance Regarding Lucy's Sad Plight

Reading today's Letters to the Editor in the Edmonton Journal, it is clear that many of the people expressing opposition to moving Lucy are simply reacting to the issue out of ego and emotion and have not bothered to learn any facts regarding Lucy's situation.  One writer, Hazel Sangster, makes the erroneous assumption that the PAWS and Tennessee sanctuaries tranquilize elephants for transport.  She also seems to have missed the key fact that there is actually no evidence to indicate a move would harm Lucy; to date these two sanctuaries have moved 30 elephants without incident, and many of these ex- zoo and circus elephants were affected with very serious health issues.  In another letter, Anders Roald Anderson suggests that "they" (i.e., Bob Barker and the activists) take full responsibility for Lucy's wellbeing and the cost of moving her to California.  If Mr. Anderson had paid any attention whatsoever to the matter, he would be aware that this is EXACTLY what Mr. Barker and not one, but two, very reputable accredited sanctuaries are in fact offering - to transport and provide exceptional care for Lucy for the rest of her life, at NO COST to the City of Edmonton.  Mr. Anderson also makes the suggestion that Mr. Barker et. al. pay to care for Lucy until she is well enough to be moved.  I think this is an excellent suggestion and given the generosity demonstrated by Mr. Barker and the worldwide activist community in the past, it is definitely an option worth exploring further; the question is, would the folks at the Valley Zoo be open to it, or would they flatly refuse it since it would mean they would have to think beyond their own needs and let her go?

To all of you out there who genuinely care about doing the best thing for Lucy, thank you so much for all you have done and please keep up your efforts to get the facts out there and to let the City of Edmonton and the Valley Zoo know that they are not off the hook, that they will have to account for their choices regarding Lucy.
