These pictures point out the difference in quality of murals and displays at the Edmonton and Calgary zoos. The upper picture is from the Calgary Zoo. This conservation oriented display shows some of the activities that threaten several species of wild animals in their natural habitat. It is scientifically accurate and suggests how the public can become involved in conserving wildlife. The lower picture is from the Edmonton Valley Zoo. There is very little factual information and no information on conservation. In direct conflict to what a zoo’s mandate should be, this mural uses questionable information to justify man’s domination over animals. It is unacceptable for a zoo to suggest that these endangered animals should be trained and used in acts of entertainment.
