Dear Honourable Minister;

 I have recently been made aware that the Canadian government is allowing the shipment of horses to Japan and possibly other countries for the sole purpose of slaughter. Not only is that fact disturbing but equally important is that the federal government has been caught repeatedly not enforcing its own legislation designed to protect these unfortunate animals. Horses have been seen in shipping crates too small for them and have been observed being crowded into crates with too many other horses. The CFIA denies the allegations despite clear photographic evidence and is also attempting to deflect the issue by saying that these animals ‘like to travel with their friends’ this way.

Horses have played an important role in the building of Canada and in many facets of human history. They occupy a special place in the hearts and minds of many people as companion animals and sending them to slaughter for their flesh is another negative reflection of Canada in the eyes of the world. Canada is already seen as a country trailing behind most of the developed world in terms of our protections for animals.

The ideal goal is for Canada to stop participating in the destruction, exploitation and suffering of horses completely by banning horse breeding for consumption, slaughter of horses in Canada and the exportation of live horses for slaughter.

Please put more protections for animals in place in Canada and at the very least, abide by and enforce animal protection legislation.

Thank you,
